Application Process

Navigating the application process for a concealed carry permit can be a confusing and daunting task, especially when applying in a new state. Each state has its own set of requirements and procedures, and keeping track of each state’s difference can be overwhelming. That’s where Legally Protected comes in to help. We’re dedicated to providing students and customers with comprehensive instructions and guidance throughout the application processes across the country. Read on to learn more about each state’s application processes and how we can assist you in obtaining your concealed carry permits.

  1. Attend Legally Protected’s MD HQL course, also included in our bundles/packages for free!

All MD Fingerprint Providers

  1. Go to Maryland Department of State Police (eMDSP) Online Services Portal
  2. Create an account
  3. Click “Initial Application” in top left corner
  4. Select “Firearm Services” for Profession, “HQL Standard” for License Type, and “Application” for Obtained by Method.
  5. Start and complete application
  6. Enter Instructor Relationship (Qualified Handgun Instructor number found on Instruction Sheet provided at the class
  7. Upload requested documentation
  8. Pay $50 initial application fee
Within 30 days after receiving a properly completed application, the secretary shall issue to the applicant either a handgun qualification license if the applicant is approved or a written denial of the application that contains a statement of the applicant’s appeal rights.
The initial HQL expires 10 years from the date of issuance.

  1. Attend Legally Protected’s MD Wear and Carry course, also included in our bundles/packages.

All MD Fingerprint Providers

  1. Go to Maryland State Police Licensing Portal
  2. Click “Create My Account.”
  3. Once your account is activated, click “Start HGP” to begin your application.
  4. Complete all components to the application.
    1. Select”Personal Protection” for Handgun Permit Category
    2. Enter “Personal Protection” for #15 reason
    3. Upload required documents (passport photo, training certification, fingerprint receipt)
  5. Pay $125 original application fee or $75 renewal fee.
Within 90 days after receiving a properly completed application, the secretary shall issue to the applicant either a Wear & Carry permit if the applicant is approved or a written denial of the application that contains a statement of the applicant’s appeal rights.
The initial handgun permit expires on the last day of the holder’s birth month two years after the date the permit is issued.

  1. Attend Legally Protected’s DC CCW course, also included in our Max Concealment package
  2. Purchase a handgun (Recommended FFL for DC residents: G&D Firearms – mention Legally Protected as your safety course provider
  3. Schedule an appointment for a Concealed Carry Weapon with the DC Firearms Registration branch
  4. Complete the application and attend an appointment to submit your application. You will need:
    1. Government-issued ID
    2. 2 proofs of residency (utility bill, bank statement, car registration, lease, tax return, etc. – full approved list in instructions linked above)
    3. DC training documentation (received from instructor)
    4. Firearms Registration Certificate (PD-219)
  5. During your appointment, you will submit an application, pay the $75 application fee, complete $35 fingerprints, and take a photo for your permit. 
The Chief shall issue a license to carry a concealed pistol or provide a written denial of the application within ninety (90) days receiving a completed application. 
The DC concealed carry license expires two (2) years from the date of issuance.

  2. Get FD-258 ink card fingerprints. (Recommended fingerprint provider: LiveScan/MD in Upper Marlboro – mention LEGALLY PROTECTED for a discount – take MD and/or Utah paperwork for free assistance!)

All MD Fingerprint Providers

  1. Complete paper application provided and signed by instructor.
  2. Mail application, a photocopy of your government-issued ID, a 2×2 passport photo, and a fingerprint card to the following address:

Within 60 days after receiving a properly completed application, the Utah BCI shall issue to the applicant either a Concealed Firearm Permit if the applicant is approved or a written explanation for the denial. 
The Utah concealed firearm permit is valid for a period of five years. The Bureau of Criminal Identification will send a renewal reminder letter to you approximately three months prior to your expiration.

  1. Attend Legally Protected’s Florida Concealed Firearms License course, also included in our bundles/packages
  2. Get FD-258 ink card fingerprints completed by a law enforcement agency. View “Government Operated Services” on the fingerprint provider webpage
  3. Complete the paper application.
  4. Mail the application, a 2×2 passport photo, and a fingerprint card to the following address:

The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS) has 90 days to either issue a license or deny the application. If denied, the FDACS will notify you by letter for the reason for denial and/or request that you provide them with the missing information or documentation.
The Florida concealed firearm license is valid for a period of seven years.

  2. Get two FD-258 ink card fingerprints
  3. Complete the application
  4. Mail your application, a photocopy of your government-issued ID, and 2 fingerprint cards to the following address:

Allow 75 days for the Department to process your application. If you have not received your permit or notification from the department regarding your application after 75 days please contact the Concealed Weapons Permit Unit.
The Arizona concealed weapon permit is valid for a period of five years.
