Permit Overview

The Maryland Wear and Carry Permit is required in order to legally carry a firearm in the state. This permit is issued by the Maryland State Police. Before you may legally conceal carry a firearm in Maryland, you must possess and maintain on your person a Maryland State Police-issued Handgun Wear and Carry Permit. Applicants must complete a firearm training course, complete fingerprints, and pass a background check to ensure they are qualified to carry a concealed firearm. 

Steps to Get a Permit to Carry in Maryland

  1. Complete a State-Approved Firearms Training Course. View our Maryland Wear & Carry classes or one of our packages that includes the Maryland Wear & Carry Permit. 
  2. Obtain LiveScan Fingerprints taken by an authorized provider. View a full list of government-operated agencies and private providers.
  3. Create an Account and complete your application using Maryland’s online Licensing Portal.
    • Once logged in and on the dashboard, click “HGP APPLICATIONS” and then “START NEW HGP APPLICATION.”
    • Complete all required fields. Select “Personal Protection” for Handgun Permit Category and enter “Personal Protection” for #15 Reason for Handgun Permit.
    • Continue with application, completing all required fields. Enter employment history, domestic history, and 3 personal references.
    • Upload all supporting documentation, including Qualification Score Sheet, LiveScan fingerprint receipt, and color passport-size photo.
  4. Pay a $125 Application Fee and submit application. 
  5. Receive Your Permit. Check your email and mail. As your application progresses, Maryland State Police will email application status updates. Within 90 day of submitting your application, you will be notified the final decision. Once approved, a physical card will be mailed to you.
